What items should I keep in my storm shelter?

What items should I keep in my storm shelter?

We get this question frequently and we think that it’s very important for every customer to purchase safety items for their new shelters.

Basic items include things like:

  • weather radio;
  • flashlights (with extra batteries);
  • stick on light;
  • bottled water;
  • 5 gallon bucket;
  • toilet paper;
  • first aid kit; and
  • non-perishable food items.

Another popular thing to consider would be a light/ fan combo. The light/fan combo can assist in lighting up the shelter and circulating additional air throughout the shelter. You can find the light/fan combos in the camping section at any Wal-Mart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, or Bass Pro Shop for around $30.

Also, consider buying a whistle or air horn. These noisemakers can prove to be a valuable tool to alert first responders to your location in the event you can’t easily open your shelter. A small first aid kit is another wise investment that can be used if needed. If there are any small children it is wise to pack diapers, wipes and age appropriate food.

Lastly, if anyone is on any type of medication it should be on hand and ready to take in the shelter.

What is a Survival Bucket?

What is a Survival Bucket?

A survival bucket is our idea of helping you weather the storm. The kit comes in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that in an emergency could be used as a sanitary device. Inside the bucket we provide you with a crank style weather radio… so no batteries are needed. This allows you to monitor the storm without worrying about running out of power. We also provide you with bottled water, toilet paper, flashlight and glow stick lights to help illuminate the shelter for up to 12 hours for each glow stick. We urge our customers to add anything else they might think they will need in the event of the storm. When a tornado is nearby it’s not the ideal time to be searching and digging for supplies. We take that worry away from you by providing you the essentials to ride out any storm and the bucket fits conveniently in your shelter, so when the storm strikes your supplies are already in place.
